Cryoanalgesia for the treatment of chronic pain

CRYO-S Painless

Advanced cryoneurolysis in the treatment of chronic pain.

The CRYO-S Painless cryoanalgesia device seen from two angles

CRYO-S Painless is the versatile cryoanalgesia system from METRUM CRYOFLEX, designed for cryoneurolysis based on the controlled freezing of peripheral nerves.

Cryoanalgesia is a reversible and repeatable method of treating chronic pain. Controlled cooling of the targeted nerve temporarily interrupts the conduction of pain signals, reducing pain without causing lasting damage to the surrounding tissue.

Benefits of cryoanalgesia

  • Pain relief can begin during the procedure itself.
  • Depending on the indication and the individual patient, the analgesic effect can last from 6 months up to 2 years.
  • The treatment can be repeated if the pain returns.
  • It may allow the dose of strong analgesics to be reduced or discontinued.
  • The procedure is easy to follow under ultrasound: both the cryoprobe and the developing ice zone are visible.
  • The treatment can be combined with ultrasound and X-ray guidance.
  • According to the manufacturer, the treatment does not cause scar tissue formation and does not damage muscle, fascia or adipose tissue.
  • The method can also be used to treat pain caused by established neuromas.

Clinical applications

CRYO-S Painless can be used in the treatment of various chronic and neuropathic pain conditions, including:

  • Chest wall pain, and pain following thoracotomy or mastectomy
  • Facial and hemifacial pain, including trigeminal neuralgia and other neuralgias
  • Occipital neuralgia
  • Suprascapular neuralgia
  • Ilioinguinal nerve neuralgia
  • Other peripheral neuralgias
  • Facet syndrome, that is, pain associated with degenerative changes of the facet joints
  • Pain and spasticity of the upper and lower limbs
  • Denervation treatments in the knee, shoulder and hip region
  • Phantom limb syndrome and phantom pain
  • Painful neuromas, including neuromas following amputation or surgery, and Morton’s neuroma
  • Localised pain associated with malignant disease

Purpose-designed cryoprobes

The manufacturer offers a range of disposable and reusable cryoprobes for the CRYO-S Painless system. Their dedicated design allows targeted, precise freezing followed by rapid thawing.

The cryoprobes are available with different freezing segments and geometries, so a suitable option can be selected for nerves in different anatomical locations and of differing diameters.

The medical-grade Teflon coating ensures that stimulation occurs primarily at the probe tip, supporting the precision of the treatment.

Cryoprobes of differing design for the CRYO-S Painless system

Precise, ultrasound-guided procedures

The cryoprobes and the developing ice zone appear hyperechoic on the ultrasound image, so they are clearly visible during the procedure.

This allows the target area to be identified precisely and the treatment to be carried out under ultrasound guidance.

Intelligent system control

CRYO-S Painless is a microprocessor-controlled system that continuously displays and monitors the key treatment parameters. The display shows, among others:

  • the temperature of the cryoprobe,
  • the gas cylinder pressure,
  • the gas flow inside the cryoprobe,
  • the duration of the treatment.

RFID technology

Electronic communication between the cryoprobe and the device allows the correct operating parameters to be recognised automatically and the system to configure itself for the probe in use.

Gas pressure and gas flow are set automatically, so no manual parameter entry is required.

Automatic probe verification

The device features an automatic cryoprobe verification system and offers both continuous and sequential freezing modes.

The verification system also includes automatic cleaning and a short freezing test.

Voice communication

The built-in voice communication system reports the most important operating data during the procedure, supporting the operator’s work.

Safe freezing

The integrated diagnostic nerve stimulation helps distinguish sensory from motor nerves, which can help avoid unintended freezing of motor nerves.

Two working gases

CRYO-S Painless can be operated with two medical gases:

  • carbon dioxide (CO₂): –78 °C
  • nitrous oxide (N₂O): –89 °C

The choice of working gas depends on the desired treatment parameters and the cryoprobe in use.
